Bioluminescent mushrooms have been observed since Aristotle, yet their chemistry remained unexplained for millennia. Since 2015, our group has helped reveal the ecological function, luciferin, luciferase and mechanism behind fungal light — working with collaborators across Brazil, Russia, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.
